Brigade calls for members

BAYLES desperately needs new firefighters.
The town’s fire brigade has served the community for well over 60 years but is facing a shortage of man and womanpower.
The brigade is crewed entirely by volunteers and relies on communityminded people to provide firefighting protection for the Bayles area.
With about six active members attending 20 to 30 emergencies per year, the brigade could use some more members to help spread the load, particularly people who are in the area during the day.
Stayathome mums, shiftworkers, selfemployed or active retirees are people the Country Fire Authority (CFA) is hoping will consider joining Bayles’ fire brigade.
“While we are looking for people who can respond during the day, those who are only in the area at night or on weekends will still be welcomed by the brigade,” Bayles CFA captain Jarrod McDonald said.
“In communities like Bayles it is the locals who need to be responsible for the protection of their own lives and property.
“By becoming a volunteer firefighter you increase the level of protection afforded to yourself and your neighbours.”
CFA volunteers receive nationally recognised and accredited training, which can also benefit them in their personal and professional lives.
Brigade support officer Chris Barber said safety of members was very important to CFA.
“All new members are required to complete a parttime recruit training course before they are able to respond to incidents,” he said.
Bayles Fire Brigade is holding an open day at the fire station this Sunday from 10am to 2pm.
The brigade will also hold an information session starting at 7.30pm on Tuesday, 11 October for anybody who would like to know more about becoming a volunteer firefighter.
Bayles Fire Station is at 647 KooweerupLongwarry Road, Bayles, next door to the Bayles Hall.
