So much we’d like to see

I HUMBLY request a right of reply, to respond to Cr Helen Ward’s vicious and personal attack on my name, my integrity and my right to nominate for local government. First, I thank Cr Ward for getting my letter of congratulations into print. I had attempted to get it published several months ago and it did not get a run.
I stand proudly behind my comments to Cr Ward; my congratulations for setting up the Bunyip and environs community reference group were genuine, the community needed a voice and such a forum gives them an excellent one. I know the community will ensure the longevity of such a group. I also stand proudly behind my memory, for I do not have selective amnesia.
Cr Ward has followed all three of my recommendations, however, her remarks that I believe I ‘put her on the map’, or that I am the ‘power behind the throne’ is an extraordinary allegation.
I recall quite vividly that I was just one of several women she consulted and took advice from. However, I am not about to allow her to insult my integrity nor that of my colleagues in the women’s group in her attempt to rewrite history in her own words, that is not fair, nor responsible.
I certainly recognise that Cr Ward is ‘on her own journey; always has been, and always will be’, however, as a councillor I understand her role is supposed to be one of inclusion not exclusion.
Her role should be one of consultation not confrontation, conciliation not vicious personal attacks, and surely as shire councillor her role should be one of the people’s journey, not her own personal journey.
I am concerned about Cr Ward’s personal attack on my family name for it has distressed my family and my proud parents.
The position of shire councillor, representing and advocating for the community is a responsible one, and personal attacks on constituents or other candidates in a democratic election must be challenged and should not be tolerated.
Yes, I am a proud community activist; yes I have been a candidate at council elections before.
I am an ordinary person having a go, and Cr Ward’s attack on me shows up her weakness, not mine.
