Tips help save the day

By Jim Mynard
BERWICK Primary School grade four student Chelsea Arsic won a 13,500litre freshwater tank for her school during a green Christmas celebration at Federation Square.
Chelsea was one of thousands of school students who performed at Green Christmas and entered a competition to win a water tank for their school by nominating their top watersaving tips.
Her song and watersaving tips won the day.
Organiser, Gould Group chief executive AnnMaree Colborne said the watersavings tips were fantastic and it was a shame there was only one water tank to give away. “With inadequate rainfall and water restrictions, schools without tanks are really struggling to maintain their school grounds and playing fields,” she said.
“Most schools have extensive roof areas and can quickly fill a large water tank with one decent rainfall.”
Ms Colborne said Mitre 10, Nylex and Rain Harvesting sponsored the competition and donated the water tank, along with additional filters and equipment.
Acting assistant principal Andrew Horsburgh said the school was delighted, and Chelsea’s win couldn’t have come at a better time.
“We were looking at ways to maintain our indigenous plant nursery so that we could continue to supply droughthardy plants to the community, when Gould Group contacted us to tell us the results of competition.
“We are pleased with Chelsea’s win and also appreciate the generosity of Gould Group, Mitre 10, Nylex and Rain Harvesting.”
Chelsea’s top five watersaving tips were to reuse bath and shower water on the garden if the water was not too soapy; turn off the tap while brushing teeth; reduce shower times to no more than three minutes; fix leaking taps; and don’t have water bomb fights — it wastes water and leaves lots of rubbish on the ground.
