Absent buyers undermine prices

BAW Baw Livestock Exchange’s fat cattle market last Wednesday saw 389 cattle and the Thursday cow and bull sale saw 395 cows and nine bulls.
At last week’s fat cattle sale, heifers and steers increased slightly in price due to stronger demand, while a lighter yarding of vealers slipped a little.
The overall yarding of 359 head was similar to last week, with 43 buyers in attendance.
Pens of good store calves sold to good demand as did a number of cows and calves.
A total of 73 heifers sold to 216 cents and an average of 193.5 cents.
A total of 152 steers sold to 240.2 and an average of 195.9, while 151 vealers reached 256 cents and averaged 216.2.
The average price per kilo for the yarding was up 4 cents to 201.9 or $785 per head.
Thursday’s bull and cow sale saw prices for mid range dairy choppers ease as heavier choppers and beef cattle rose slightly, although the overall average was only 4 cents lighter.
Bulls were up marginally considering only nine were present at the sale, with the top price being 155.2 and the average was 146.6.
Cows made to 163.2 and averaged 130.9. The reduction in price could be related to the fact that two major buyers were not in attendance. The yard average eased to 127.7 or $575 per head.
