AN excellent 91 not out by Cardinia Agrade captaincoach Mark Cooper held its innings together to help his side amass 178 against Devon Meadows in the opening round of the West Gippsland Cricket Association season on Saturday
Cooper’s meticulous innings displayed both power and touch in a knock that captured the attention of teammates and opposition alike.
The day was off to a bad start for Cardinia as John Nooy was run out in the second over.
A steadying partnership between Cooper and Jamie Glen got the score to 60 before the latter was caught for 27.
It was 3/88 when Ben DaRose (21) was out after playing a scorching coverdrive only to find the fieldsman’s hands.
Cardinia then suffered a mini collapse, losing 5/8. Dwayne Doig (22) was disappointingly the only other batsman to reach double figures in the total of 178 as the Bulls’ were bowled out in the 68th over.
Having eight overs remaining in the day, the Panthers are 0/10 in reply.
D GRADE
In a side filled with experience, it was one of the younger members in Ricky Campbell that top scored in the Bulls’ total of 100 against Emerald.
Campbell blasted 25 before he succumbed to a shortpitched delivery, made into a simple catch for the fieldsman patrolling the deep squareleg boundary.
Gary Glen returned to cricket in fine form, getting off the mark with a towering six, on his way to 21. Craig Bell (13) and Daniel Cairns (11) both got starts, but were unable to go on.
Chasing the Bulls’ meagre total of 100, the Bombers are 4/74 with Wayne Snooks claiming all four scalps to have the figures of 4/28.
