Fiasco set to be dumped

I HEAR whispers that the City of Casey may be about to bite the bullet and fix the Berwick commercial waste collection fiasco.
Agreement is close between the Berwick Chamber of Commerce and the council on striking a rate for waste collection that will enable the council to manage the collection process.
Chamber president Michael Hall foreshadowed action on waste in the village during the February chamber meeting and said it would be discussed in detail during the March meeting.
He said earlier this year he was confident the council would introduce a supplementary rate and Edrington Ward councillor Brian Hetherton confirmed this.
The rate would cover the cost of a single contractor to collect commercial waste from the shopping precinct.
Berwick has, without much opposition to the claim, been dubbed as one of the nicer towns in the southeast, but in later years has become a mess because of a badly managed garbage collection system.
Dirty bins and rubbish around parking areas and the street have become the norm and unacceptable.
Getting this system in place will be a major challenge for the council, but is a must.
Once it is made to work in Berwick other strip shopping centres will have a precedent to work on in order to have a similar service provided.
This is a council responsibility.
