City may honour namesake

RIVER Gum Ward councillor Wayne Smith has asked Casey council officers to report to the first meeting in November on the feasibility of design, cost, and possible location of a feature to recognise Casey’s namesake.
Cr Smith said he was at a function when a small girl asked if there was a photograph of Lord Casey.
He said he believed her school had studied the origin of the City of Casey name and that some recognition was needed.
Lord Casey, who lived with his wife Maie in Berwick, was Australia’s 16th GovernorGeneral.
He served at Gallipoli and in France, and won the Military Cross.
He was was born in Brisbane, Queensland, and recognised as an Australian statesman serving both as a diplomat and politician.
Casey received the title Baron Casey of Berwick.
Lord Casey never fully recovered from a car accident in 1974, and died in June 1976.
