CASEY Council will erect signs warning that swooping magpies are nesting in council parks if the birds prove too aggressive for residents.
Casey mayor Kevin Bradford said spring was nesting season for birds and asked residents to be aware and protect themselves against possible attack.
“While Casey enjoys vibrant native bird life, during their breeding season, the birds, especially magpies, may strongly defend their territory to protect their nests, eggs or young by swooping passersby,” he said. “Residents need to take measures to protect themselves, such as looking out for the birds, avoiding swoop areas, wearing a hat and staying calm.
“Relocating the birds from their native habitat is not considered an environmentally suitable outcome. All native birds are protected and there are serious penalties for illegally harming or capturing them or interfering with their nests and eggs.”
To report an area of concern contact the City of Casey’s environmental health team on 9705 5200.
