Games stall Berwick’s GP festival

BERWICK Village Chamber of Commerce has decided not to hold a followup grand prix festival this year.
Chamber manager Des Wynne said the function would be too close to the Commonwealth Games and this meant dedicated support was not available.
Mr Wynne said the chamber decided to still hold a gala fundraising night and grid girl competition, similar to the grand prix preliminary event last year.
He said this would be held at Central Star Auto Haus because of its links with Formula 1 racing.
“It was considered important that we maintain the momentum towards an even bigger and better grand prix festival for 2007, but the committee decided the risks of running a successful street festival were too great for this year,” Mr Wynne said.
He said the closeness to the Commonwealth Games and the lack of committed support and funds from key participants from last year were factors in the decision.
“The gala fundraising night will be from 6.15pm on Tuesday, 14 March,” he said.
“We aim to raise money for a charitable donation as well as seed funding for the 2007 Grand Prix Festival.
“To help us raise the funds, we need support from business in the way of product, goods, and services donations which can then be sold at auction, or raffled, or used as prizes for other fundraising competitions and activities.
“The chamber is keen to ensure that a variety of interests are covered so our needs are not confined to only motoring items.”
