HARKAWAY Primary School students have moved into their new building.
Principal Fred Hess said students attended the first assembly in the new building on Monday 17 October.
Mr Hess said the $2 million project began with an election promise from Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan.
“After many years of relocatables and makedo accommodation, the school has finally been provided with a permanent building to house the 200 students,” he said.
Mr Hess said Harkaway was a small community focussed school.
“Raf Jovanovic from Norris Architects worked closely with the school community to design a new structure that would incorporate five class spaces, library, administration reception and staffroom with the 129 year old original building.
“Not only did they seek to complement the old school building, it was important that the new spaces support the unique educational philosophy and strategies used at Harkaway.
“The school has bright, open learning spaces with minimal walls. These reflect the flexible strategies used in the multiage classrooms taught by teams of teachers.”
Mr Hess said the school planned to officially opening the new building on Friday 17 February. “This will be followed by a celebration of 130 Years on Saturday 18 February.
People who have an association with the school or know anyone who does is encouraged to contact the principal, Fred Hess, or leading teacher, Wendy O’Brien, on 9707 1475 to register interest in the celebration.
