Stray cattle concern police

PAKENHAM Police are concerned about cattle escaping from paddocks and straying on to road reserves to access feed as the drought worsens.
Acting Sergeant Stuart Halligan said police were called when cattle escaped onto Sybella Avenue and South Gippsland Highway at Kooweerup on Monday.
“We are working with the Cardinia Shire local laws staff to secure the cattle when these escapes occur,’’ he said.
Acting Sgt Halligan said it appeared some animals were pushing through fences to access feed on the road reserves.
He said the increased number of recent escapes of cattle was a concern and owners were encouraged to ensure fences were in order.
“We want to avoid any serious accidents involving stock and vehicles,’’ he said.
A man was killed last month when his car hit a horse on the Princes Highway in Pakenham.
