FOR the week ending Monday, 26 September, total yarding at the VLE Pakenham was 1671 plus bobby calves.
This number consisted of 820 cattle on the Monday, 479 last Tuesday, and 372 at Thursday’s Store Sale.
Some of the best quality cattle travelled from Stawell in the Western District to sell at rates equivalent to those of similar quality the previous week.
There was fewer of these good quality vealers and supplementary fed yearlings for processors and butchers to compete over, which saw prices remain unchanged and at times up to six cents per kilogram higher. This was despite a larger yarding that offered a good selection of plainer condition suiting feedlots and restockers.
Prices for better quality were between 230 cents and 258.2 cents with feeder and restockers making from 200 cents to 235 cents per kilogram.
There was a reasonable amount of heavier and older cattle penned which included several pens of cows.
Prices for grown steers and bullocks were mostly unchanged, while older heifers and cows were up to four cents per kilogram cheaper.
