THE Warriors had two teams in junior grand finals after the Under 16 Boys side’s good recent form continued and the Under 14 Girls were equally impressive in winning a berth. Tonight, in a doubleheader at Pakenham Stadium, the men’s team plays at 8.45pm against Doncaster while the women’s team follows at 9.45pm.
UNDER 16 BOYS
Playing in the second semifinal against Mornington who the Warriors had not been able to beat in two homeandaway games was going to be a challenge. In the first half there was desperate basketball from both sides and the lead changed several times, the Breakers being just ahead at the break 2422.
Mornington led by six points early in the second half but the Warriors responded to tie the game up. The teams traded baskets until 3.40 was left on the clock and the Warriors were up by three points. As they ran down the clock a succession of fouls put the Warriors on the freethrow line and the Warriors who went on to an impressive 4536 win.
Guard Cheyne Petitt (10 points) was outstanding and Nick Fromhold (eight) drove hard at the basket. Francois LeCordier (four) made fine intercepts and both throws from the line in the final minutes. Jacob D’Arcy (six) was at his athletic best, rebounding strongly.
UNDER 14 GIRLS
The Warriors played Latrobe Energy on Saturday night in round two of the finals. The Warriors knew they would need to be off to a good start and in the first half were up 151. The starting five put a good lead on the board and the rest of the team was able to hold that lead throughout.
It was an impossible task to choose best efforts as every player did what was asked of them. In what was a strong defensive game by the Warriors, the Energy had no answers. The Warriors won 3921 and will play LaTrobe or Ringwood in the grand final next Saturday.
