Accidents highlight tractor dangers

TWO serious accidents in 24 hours highlighted the dangers of working with tractors and prompted warnings to farmers to take even greater care.
An 82yearold Officer man suffered serious head and chest injuries and was flown to hospital after being hit by a tractor at his home on Tuesday, 13 April.
It is believed the man was beside the tractor working on the engine when it jumped forward while in gear, knocking him to the ground before it crashed into the wall of a shed and stalled.
The following day, an 18yearold West Gippsland man was run over by a tractor which rolled backwards down a slope.
He tried to climb on to the machine but slipped and was hit by a front wheel.
Authorities said it was believed the brakes were not properly applied.
Both men survived, but were treated for chest injuries at the Alfred Hospital.
WorkSafe director of manufacturing, logistics and agriculture programs Trevor Martin said the incidents should send a strong message to farmers and other users of heavy equipment.
“Again, these cases demonstrate there are serious physical consequences of coming into contact with these machines,” Mr Martin said.
“It’s not enough to say ‘I’ve always done it this way’ or rely on years of experience to ensure no one is hurt.
“You do not often get a second chance when there is a safety incident with a tractor.”
