Car gas leak scare

A CAR gas leak with a suspected cause of an overfilled gas tank saw CFA units from across the region called to Pakenham on Friday.
The car’s owner alerted the CFA around 10.30am after he discovered the leak.
CFA crews from Pakenham and Officer attended the James Street scene, and had the leak under control in about an hour.
First lieutenant Wayne Nutting said the tank had most likely been overfilled, causing the leak.
“We got onto it fairly quickly to eliminate the potential of any disaster occurring,” he said.
“But it had the potential to cause a few problems. LPG can be very dangerous.”
He said the crews eliminated any possible ignition sources in the area, such as pilot lights.
He said the gas support unit then “flared off” the excess gas in the tank until it was at an appropriate level.
He said the car’s owner had been allowed to drive away from the scene.
