Casey Fields to bowl ‘em over

PLANS are underway to provide the southeast with an international undercover lawn bowls facility at Casey Fields, Cranbourne.
Chairman of selectors at the Cranbourne RSL Bowls Club Ron Halligan was listed to present the proposal to the Casey general purposes committee last night.
This is another big plus for the burgeoning Casey Fields complex that has the probability of becoming one of Australia’s top sporting complexes and a drawcard for major international events.
Mr Halligan said the centre would involve an international standard indoor bowls centre and would also have an outdoor bowling facility.
Balla Balla Ward councillor Colin Butler, who organised the presentation, said Mr Halligan had met with senior council officers and received some guidance.
“What I like is that it could be married with a group that could put money back into facilities at Casey Fields,” he said.
“The proponent has used modellings from other successful bowls facilities and the only stumbling block I see is initial financing.
“It will be much bigger than anything we already have and will involve a wide range of smaller sports such as darts and I believe even card playing rooms.”
My view is that if this proposal receives council blessing it could eventually go ahead to become an exciting development for sport and leisure in the southeast.
The only problem is that it foreshadows more poker machines and that makes it part of a social tragedy.
