Cigarette sale to head to court

A SHOPKEEPER is being taken to court by Cardinia Shire Council after allegedly selling cigarettes to a minor and then refusing to pay a fine.
Council was told at its meeting on Monday that a $200 infringement notice had been issued to the unnamed premises after cigarettes were sold to a person under the age of 18 during test purchasing.
“This is now being pursued in the Magistrates’ Court because they have refused to pay,” a report to council said.
Test purchasing was carried out at 12 local outlets in recent months.
Council was told a complaint had been made about a different shop selling cigarettes to children but that it did not sell cigarettes to the minor during test purchasing.
