ELDERS from the local Wurundjeri tribe will decide the future direction of the Mt Shamrock quarry in Pakenham Upper in the next few weeks.
Wurundjeri elders will meet with quarry operators, Readymix, in the hope of being further informed on a number of concerns they have with the extension.
The State Government gave initial approval to the Readymix quarry extension in May but only on the provision that the Wurundjeri tribe provided their consent.
Interim CEO of the Wurundjeri Land and Compensation Cultural Heritage Council, Megan Goulding, said the elders will come to a decision and then either approve or deny the extension.
“We are currently in the process of organising an onsite meeting with Readymix officials so the elders can be fully briefed on the quarry extension and discuss any concerns they may have,” Ms Goulding said.
The Wurundjeri council is made up of 20 elders who will have the final say in the proposed extension.
“Along with the Environmental Effects Statement (EES) and the information we are presented with at this meeting, the elders will make their final decision regarding the extension.”
Readymix quarry planning and development manager, Leigh Street, said the company would not comment on the meeting or any of the issues that would be discussed with the Wurundjeri elders.
