New buyer leads to good market

THE Baw Baw Livestock Exchange Warragul market report saw 1042 cattle at the Wednesday fat cattle market, and 564 cows and 57 bulls at the Thursday cow and bull sale.
With a new interstate processor joining the ranks, along with a couple of new vendors from South Gippsland, Wednesday’s fat cattle sale was a busy event as the yarding rose above 1000 head.
Three local vendors delivered more than 60 head each to keep buyers busy competing for required stock.
The new buyer helped to keep the momentum up, purchasing 61 head on his first day, and prices remained firm on recent sales with vealers quoted up five cents in some sales with a top price of 226.2 cents.
Steers were also dearer in certain sales with some being up 10 cents.
The top price was 206.6 cents.
Heifers remained steady to top at 203.2 cents, up marginally in the better quality sales.
Quality was good with some heavy head yarded to give an average for the yarding of $731 per head.
Demand for bulls and cows still remained firm as Thursday sale proved, with prices remained relatively unchanged in comparison to the last sale held.
With 57 bulls presented the top price of 148 cents was equal to the top in the last sale, and a majority of the bulls penned were in the 140-cent region.
Weighed cows made to a top of 174.2 cents and the unweighed cows reached $920.
The yard average settled at 126 cents or $645 per head for the 621 head yarded.
