Grounds given a sporting chance

SPORTING delegates have been ‘good sports’ about dry sporting fields.
They are working closely with Casey council officers to find ways and means of dealing with the severe drought conditions impacting on sports grounds.
The council hosted a forum on Monday 20 November for local sporting clubs to discuss the use of municipal sporting grounds during summer.
Casey manager of arts and leisure Robyn Bowen commended club representatives for their positive approach to the difficult situation.
“The response at the forum is evidence that the council and clubs will continue to work together to ensure that grounds remain in the best possible condition for both summer and winter seasons.
“Council officers will continue to work closely with clubs during the water restrictions to ensure that all possible measures are undertaken to minimise any negative impact,” she said.
The Victorian Coaching Centre also provided information on alternative training methods for clubs and coaches to assist in continuing activities.
Clubs have been notified that preseason training for football sports should not be conducted on ovals until Thursday 1 February at the earliest.
Council officers will assess grounds and review this decision closer to that date.
Preseason training can continue at other appropriate facilities.
The 200607 cricket season is not affected, but grounds will be monitored to ensure player safety.
These restrictions do not affect ovals at Casey Fields or the Cranbourne Soccer Fields in O’Tooles Road that use recycled water.
