MORNINGTON Peninsula Nepean League goalkicking legend Simon Goosey slotted through 20 goals for Mornington against Hastings on Saturday, to reach his tenth consecutive century for the club.
It was the 36yearold star’s highest personal tally in a game and brought his season to 110 goals with one homeandaway game to play.
Goosey, who announced recently that he will retire after the Bulldogs’ clash with Pines next Saturday, has kicked more than 1500 goals in his 13 seasons with Mornington and coached the club to four premierships.
Goosey gained notoriety earlier this year when he booted four goals in the E. J. Whitten Legends game and said he hoped to remain involved in football next season, possibly in an assistant’s role with an AFL club. He recently spent time assisting with training at the Western Bulldogs.
Mornington booted 40 goals to down Hastings by 209 points on the back of Goosey’s effort, while the other highlight of Peninsula League was secondplaced Chelsea’s 43point defeat of top side Mt Eliza.
In the final homeandaway round of MPNFL Nepean League football, Sorrento snatched fourth place from Tyabb with a 57point result and secondplaced Rye gained a confidence boost over next week’s qualifying final opponent Langwarrin, with a 13point win.
Pearcedale finished its season off with a whimper, losing to top team Frankston Bombers by 172 points and sealing itself on the bottom of the ladder after the midseason departure of Carrum Downs.
Panthers coach Matt Benwell has announced that he will step aside next season and coach the Pearcedale under 18s.
