Backman fires for medal

JUNIOR Joel Backman was the star at Drouin Golf Club on Saturday shooting a 65 nett to win C grade and the monthly medal.
Runner up in C grade was Ron Harris on 67, Chris Hunt and John Fusinato both returned 69.
In B grade Bill Pyle (19) won on a countback with 71 from George Shand. Lindsay Robinson had 72 and Charlie Hardy 73.
Joe Matokovic won a fourway playoff in A grade with nett 69.
Runner up was John Piner, followed by Fred Gajdobranski and Matt Curtain. Matt also had the best gross score of the day with 77.
Nearest to pins – second: Jim McCormack, fifth: Stewart Williams, 23rd (propin): John Fusinato.
Balls went down to 72 and the CCR was 73.
There was also a ladies competition on Saturday with 10 players. Peg Hocking (19) won with 69 nett from Bev Goodwin on 71.
Nearest to pin on the fifth was Lorna Hoskins.

@BT Sub Sport Gaz:MIDWEEK RESULTS

On Wednesday 76 players turned out for the midweek Stableford competition and it was Matt Long playing off scratch who was on the right side of a countback in A Grade winning with 36 points from Cleo Sahhar.
Ivan Moffatt, Rex Amey and Peter Devries all scored 36.
Lindsay Robinson (16) fared best in B grade with 39 points. Bob Ramage was next on 37 while Zed Weiclaw, Stan Weller and Graeme Grant all had 35.
In C grade Jack Gough (20) had the highest score of the day with 41 points.
Runnerup was Michael Sullivan with 40 on a countback from Ian Dorsie. John Fusinato was next on 38.
Nearest to pins – second: Doug Scott, 19th: Zed Weiclaw.
Balls went down to 37 on a countback and the CCR was 70.

@BT Sub Sport Gaz:CUP DAY EVENT

The Lions Club held its annual Melbourne Cup Day event on Tuesday last week and a field of almost 80 competed.
Glenn Flowers (eight) won the men’s A grade with a fine 41 points on a countback from Matt Long.
Derek Anderson won B grade with 38 points and the Cgrade winner was Peter Walsh with 40 points on a countback from Graeme Brenchley.
The ladies Agrade winner was Maureen Withers on a countback from Lorna Hoskins both on 39 points.
Bgrade winner was Glenda Mayne (Southern Golf Club) with 37 on a countback from Glenda Warren.

@BT Sub Sport Gaz:MONDAY RESULTS

The ninehole comp was tied between Ross Land and Graham Dorling both on 21 points. Lester Smethurst, Geoff Thomas and Colin Moss also tied in the Thursday Seniors nine hole event with 19 points each.

As last Tuesday was the Lions annual Melbourne Cup Charity Day and the ladies day was moved to Thursday.
With Oaks Day taking some members away and some having to work, only a small field turned up to contest a Stableford event on the Matthew Bennett course. The CCR was 37.
The winner was Ethel Manley with 38 points and the runnerup on a countback was Mildred Lyon with 37 points.
Downtheline balls went to Jill Brenchley with 37 points and Olive Reid with 35 points.
There was no nearest the pin recorded.
This Tuesday is the Victorian Seniors Championships so our ladies day has again been forwarded ahead to Thursday and will be par.
