Cannons fire up over prize theft

Jim Mynard
THIEVES stole raffle prizes, cash and food valued at more than $2000 from the Cannons Hockey Club room at Berwick Secondary College last week.
Juniors coach Jeff Reidy said they broke in through the roof and took golf clubs and other items acquired as prizes for a raffle.
Mr Reidy said the young hockey players had been working hard to raise money for items need in their new clubhouse and the loss was a disappointment.
A club spokesperson said the breakin happened during the night of Friday 25 August.
He said they pulled back the spouting and lifted the roofing iron to gain access.
“They took cash from the cash register, our raffle prizes and valuable hockey sticks, plus stocks we needed for general running of the canteen.
“Loss of our raffle prizes has devastated members because we have sold raffle tickets and now have no prizes.
One of the prizes was a set of golf clubs valued at $1600.”
The building being used is in an insecure area, but club members hope soon to be in their new clubrooms that will have more security including a link to the security alarm system at the school.
