Dressing percentages push prices

FOR the week ending Monday, 12 December, total yarding at the VLE Pakenham was 4228 plus bobby calves.
This number consisted of 1672 cattle on the Monday, 1436 on the Tuesday and 1120 at Thursday’s Store Sale.
Vealers were in better supply and generally of reasonable to good quality.
The lack of top quality vealers weighing around 400 kilogram liveweight helped to reduce the top price.
But, overall vealers sold at rates up to seven cents per kilogram higher.
Quite a number of good quality vealers made between 190 cents and 225 cents per kilogram.
Some of the very good quality yearlings penned were quite heavy, weighing up to 560 kilograms.
Because of the good dressing percentage prices were mostly five cents dearer, which saw a number of heavy steers make between $900 and $1100 per head.
Grown steers and heifers were not as prevalent during the week and so demand was stronger.
Prices were up to four cents per kilogram higher, which was a better result than the Tuesday the previous week.
