GARFIELD Junior Football Club’s under12 team broke a 21year drought with just one point in its recent grand final.
In a nailbiting contest with Drouin, the juniors survived a late charge from their opponents to take home the treasured flag, the first for the club in 21 years.
The final scores in the match was Garfield 1.2.8 to Drouin 1.1.7.
Coach Tim Collis said it was a remarkable game.
“It was really close all day, the last few minutes were very exciting,” he said.
In the dying moments of the game, Drouin had cleared the ball and was charging toward the goals, but the siren halted the attack much to the relief of Garfield players and supporters.
“It was scenes of celebration,” Collis said.
Undefeated for the entire season, the Garfield unit had outperformed even their coach’s expectations.
Collis said the team had one draw and that was as close to a loss as it came.
“But to go on and win the grand final was a terrific achievement,” he said.
Coke and hotdogs provided the bulk of celebrations, followed by a victory lap.
“The boys came in and sang the song with gusto, that’s for sure,” he said.
