Kevin fires for Drouin medal

PLAYING off the back markers was a good omen for Drouin Golf Club’s Kevin O’Riley on Saturday.
With a fine nett 69, Kevin (22) took out the monthly medal and C grade and was one of the few players to beat their handicap.
Sponsored by Gippsland Bulk Spreaders, there was a good field of 126 players who teed up for the medal.
Better scores in C grade were Paul Buttigieg 70 and Peter Cunningham 70.
With no one jumping out of the box with a low score in B grade, it was Danny Lafrantz (18) sneaking a win with nett 74. Surprisingly this was three clear of the next best a 77 returned by Charlie Hardy and Stan Weller.
Brett Dessent (six) returned to form to take out A grade with 72 from Tom Carroll 73 and Jesse Youngman 73.
Nearest to pins 14th: Bill Mapleson, 17th: Jack Gardiner, 19th: Brad Bennett, 23rd (pro pin): Ryan Hammond. The CCR was 74.

WEDNESDAY COMPETITION

There were 86 players who enjoyed fine morning conditions for the Stableford competition and Mick Hamilton was up early to take full advantage, winning A grade with the day’s highest score of 41 points.
Peter Collins was runnerup with 39 on a countback from Kevin Johnson. Ryan Hammond and Shane Dwyer both had 37.
In B grade it was George Shand (15) leading the way with 37 points.
Arnold Mills, 35 points, won the runnersup voucher on a countback from Fred Delaney.
In C grade, Doug Lancaster (20) was the winner with 39 points. Greg Paterson 36 was runnerup, once again on a count back from Bob Ramage.
Nearest to pins – second: Kevin Johnson, 14th: Jim McCormack, fifth (pro pin): Mick Hamilton.
The main excitement of the day came from Peter Johnson who had his first ever holeinone on the 17th hole.

MONDAY COMPETITION

The ninehole competition was well attended and regular Peter Browne (27) won three golf balls for his 23 points. Bruce Horskins was next best on 21 followed by Mick Devries on 19.
The Thursday seniors’ competition was cancelled due to rain.

COMING EVENTS

The dinner and show (‘Rock Around the World’) will be held on Saturday, 3 September. This is shaping up to be a great night and needs the support of members to be a success.
Next Saturday is the first round of the Winter Wade par.

LADIES

In contrast to the rain and wind of the previous week, last Tuesday’s weather was warm and sunny and the golfers competed in a stroke event for the monthly medal and the final round of the silver spoon. The CCR was 76.
The winner of the silver spoon was Julie Robertson.
The Agrade winner and winner of the monthly medal was Mary Tymensen with a score of 73 nett.
The runnerup was Lorraine Burke with 74 nett.
B grade winner was Poss Leeson with 77 nett.
The runnerup was Glenda Warren with 79 nett.
Nearest the pin on the fifth was Jill Brenchley and on the 19th was Sylvia Martin.
The propin was won by Mary Clark.
Downtheline balls went to Jenni Harris with 76 nett, Margaret Purcell 77 nett, Bernace Miller 78 nett and Helen Andreason 79 nett on a countback.
Bev Pollard won the ninehole competition with 14 points.
The Thursday nine hole seniors’ competition cancelled due to the weather.

RUNAWAY BUGGY

Helen Andreason made sure her batterypowered buggy was switched off and secure this week after it took off while she was concentrating on putting on the 15th green last week.
It made an epic journey from the 15th to the 18th green and ended up in the ditch.
Fellow players joked that it must have been in a hurry to finish and get out of the cold.
This week is Stableford, secret partners and next week will be the annual general meeting with a ninehole event to follow.
