TYABB won its way to a first semifinal showdown against Rye with a 77point upset win over the Sorrento Sharks in Saturday’s Nepean League elimination final at Rye.
The 134point turnaround from the side’s previous meeting in the final homeandaway round the week before, proved that the Yabbies didn’t show all their cards in that match.
The Sharks were surprised by Tyabb’s fastrunning game and quick delivery to key forwards Justin Sweeney and veteran Brendan Fox, who shared 11 of the Yabbies 22 goals between them.
In the qualifying final on Sunday, Langwarrin proved too slick for Rye, winning a second semifinal berth by five goals against Frankston Bombers this weekend.
The weekend results mean that three of the four sides left in the race for this season’s Nepean League premiership, were members of the old Peninsula Division in 2004 and reaffirms the strength of that division, the majority of whose members now make up the CaseyCardinia League.
In the final round of Peninsula League football prior to the finals, Pines spoiled veteran goalkicker Simon Goosey’s last game for Mornington with a 40point upset result.
The Bulldogs had celebrated Goosey’s tenth consecutive 100goal season the week before at Alexandra Park, but ‘the Goose’ was upstaged by Pythons’ veteran Rick Vaughan who kicked seven majors to see his side finish a disappointing year on a positive note.
The final four in the league finished with Mt Eliza and Chelsea two games clear of Frankston YCW that will play fourthplaced EdithvaleAspendale in this Sunday’s first semifinal at Frankston Park.
