HAILEYBURY College has appointed John Fleming as the new head of its Edrington campus at Berwick.
Incumbent campus head Lynne Watts has accepted an appointment as one of the three vice principals of Haileybury and will be based at Keysborough, reporting to principal Dr Robert Pargetter.
Dr Pargetter said Mr Fleming was a highly respected leader in education.
“Mr Fleming has played a major role in determining the future of Victorian education and nationwide literacy standards, and is the pioneer of phonicsbased teaching,” he said.
“He has been actively involved in the National Inquiry into the Teaching of Literacy Report released this month by Federal Education Minister Brendan Nelson. He has also won several awards in literacy and numeracy, team teaching, educational leadership and social improvement.
“Mr Fleming is involved with research and development both with the University of Melbourne and with the State Government Department of Education and Training.
“During the past decade, Mr Fleming has successfully led Bellfield Primary School as principal.
“Mr Fleming’s extensive background and commitment to education ensure his appointment as head of Edrington will not only benefit Berwick, but will also help Haileybury continue as one of Melbourne’s leading independent schools.”
