Quarry expansion stalemate

THE go ahead for a contentious expansion of the Mount Shamrock Quarry in Pakenham Upper is still on hold.
Wurundjeri elders are continuing talks with quarry operator Readymix, with a potential decision still looking like being some weeks away.
The State Government gave initial approval to the Readymix quarry extension in May but only on the provision that the Wurundjeri tribe provided their consent.
That consent is yet to come from the tribe’s elders.
Megan Goulding, Interim CEO of the Wurundjeri Land and Compensation Cultural Heritage Council, said the group were hoping to make the process as efficient as possible, but a definite time frame could not be put on the final decision.
“We are still in discussions at this stage and things are progressing well,” Ms Goulding said.
A spokeswoman for Planning Minister Rob Hulls said an approval for the quarry extension would not be provided until Readymix presented a consent to disturb motion signed by the Wurundjeri people.
The proposed extension of the quarry is being sought so that a further 20 million tonnes of basalt can be extracted from the Pakenham Upper site over the next 20 years.
