Sculpture design inspired by plant life

LOCAL plant life was the inspiration for the scultpure that will take pride of place outside the landmark Cardinia Cultural Centre in Pakenham.
The $62,000 public art work is the first of a series under a joint venture of council and Delfin Lend Lease.
Awardwinning sculptor Paul Johnson was commissioned to create the piece, specifically designed for the forecourt of the cultural centre.
Mr Johnson said he was excited about being awarded the Cardinia commission.
“I see it as an opportunity to make an important work which is inspired by the local environment and will contribute to a history of public art in the area.”
The work is intended to complement the architecture of the centre. Its form references the plant life in the area, in particular the local sedge.
The sculpture will be made from stainless steel, copper and a large rock which will be sourced from a local quarry.
The work will measure 5.5 metres in height and 4.5 metres in diameter.
Private sponsorship will be sought to help pay for materials.
