CASEY engineering and environmental services manager David Richardson has called on residents to watch for weeds in the high-growth time of the year.
“With the onset of warmer weather now is the time to identify and target weeds on your property,” Mr Richardson said.
He described a weed as ‘any plant out of place’ and said weeds were the greatest threat to the City of Casey’s environment.
“In worst case scenarios they can cause extinctions by out-competing indigenous plants for space, light and nutrients.
“It is estimated that only seven per cent of the municipality now supports remnant indigenous vegetation, of which a large proportion is moderately to severely degraded.”
Weeds treatable at this time of the year include blackberry, agapanthus and sweet pittosporum.
