BERWICK woodworkers on Sunday presented more than 400 toys to alms groups, who will provide them to needy families this Christmas.
The toys were given to the Cardinia Combined Churches, Cranbourne Salvation Army, and Berwick Benevolent Society.
They will be placed with families struggling to make ends meet at Christmas.
Narre Warren South MP Dale Wilson officially handed the toys to the groups on behalf of the Berwick and District Woodworkers’ Club.
Mr Wilson said he was in a position to see much of the club’s good work.
“We are here to present the toys they have made to the three groups and to thank the woodworkers,” he said.
“Their work means that families struggling at Christmas have the chance to share a little Christmas joy.
“Many people benefit from the work they do, even the club members who share good times and fellowship while they work.”
Berwick Benevolent Society president Fay Powell said considerable thought went into making the toys.
“There is always something new, but the older ideas are still valuable and popular,” she said.
Jeni Mathieson from Cardinia Combined Churches said the toys were well appreciated by those that received them.
“We make up 500 hampers for Christmas and the toys will be highly appreciated,” she said.
Cranbourne Salvation Army representative Henni Watts said the Salvos saw the harsher side of life, but had 30 volunteers to help with problems in society.
“If it wasn’t for these volunteers and people like the woodworkers I wonder what would happen,” Ms Watts said.
“The best time for our work is Christmas because we get to call and see the woodworkers’ workshop.
“It’s like Santa’s cave.”
