Big week for Bulls

BAW Baw had five wins in competition matches last week, including a walkover for the men in State League. The bulls’ junior sides maintained their finals hopes.

MEN’S STATE LEAGUE 4

Ballarat was unfortunate in Round 12, running into severe traffic congestion on the freeway. This caused the visitors to be more than 15 minutes late, forcing a walkover, which would have been a disappointment given the distance the team had travelled. In a scratch match the Bulls scored eight goals to Ballarat’s two.
Scores: Baw Baw 5 d Ballarat 0 (walkover).

WOMEN’S STATE LEAGUE 4

Although two players short, the Bulls started strongly, but Brunswick was pressing to capitalise and had many opportunities to score. Alia Brammal, in goals for the first time, played a fine game and was supported well by Kim Reid and Kim Dorling. Baw Baw worked hard in midfield to keep possession. The forwards also ran back hard to help in midfield. Baw Baw was able to convert the penalty corner opportunities and by halftime had a 20 lead.
In the second half Baw Baw rallied and for 15 minutes set an incredible pace to keep the opposition out while scoring another goal to go 30 up. In the last 10 minutes, Brunswick attacked hard and scored from a penalty corner.
Scores: Baw Baw 3 d Brunswick 1.
Goals: Rebecca Cheater, Jo Buckler, Kim Reid 1.

MEN’S PENNANT E

With a great win against sixthplaced LaTrobe the Bulls took a step up the ladder to keep them away from the chances of relegation for next year.
Scores: Baw Baw 5 d LaTrobe Uni 4.

MEN’S METRO 4 SOUTH

The Bulls took out another victory to consolidate their fifth place.
Scores: Baw Baw 4 d RMIT 2.

UNDER 17 PENNANT A

The Bulls scored the first goal through an excellent play by Chris Weller, who ran downfield and won a contest with the goalie. However, that turned out to be the Bulls’ only score as their passes became inaccurate and they foundered when trying to get the ball past the centre. Numerous penalty corners afforded Altona ample opportunities to score. Despite the loss the Bulls were holding fifth place with five games to go.
Scores: Altona 3 d Baw Baw 1.

GIRLS UNDER 17 SOUTH

Baw Baw tried new positions in the first half and took a while to settle down. In the second half, all players lifted dramatically and scored four quick goals with great attacking hockey after repeatedly rebounding out of defence. Goalie Kate Walker had more of a workout than expected against the rapidly improving Moorabbin and conceded only her second goal for the season. The Bulls’ midfielders won a lot of possessions and put the Moorabbin defence under considerable pressure. The match ended prematurely when the umpire blew his whistle far too early.
Scores: Baw Baw 4 d Moorabbin 1.
Goals: Jessie Gleeson 2, Sheree Thomson, Tiarna Kramer 1.

UNDER 15 PENNANT A

The Bulls had a disappointing game but still managed to hold sixth place, equal fifth on points. There are only 10 points between the top six teams and so have a good chance of finals in their first year in a higher grade.
Scores: Mentone 3 d Baw Baw 1.

UNDER 13 PENNANT SOUTH

With one player down, the young Bulls played a determined game and kept Eastern scoreless until the last five minutes of the half. Goalie Michael Dobson was superb. In the second half a great pass from Jesse Ward enabled Michael Kramer to score. The most disciplined player was Dana Howard.
Scores: Eastern 3 d Baw Baw 1.
Goals: Michael Kramer 1.
