Council to focus on sheds at large

LARGE sheds on residential properties will come under the council’s close scrutiny at last.
Casey mayor Neil Lucas has called for a council report on the establishment of large sheds in Ware Place, Brisbane Street, Berwick, and in Narre Warren North.
Cr Lucas asked that the report and briefing to councillors cover the circumstances that allowed such large sheds to be built in residential areas to the detriment of neighbouring properties.
He also asked that the report record what action the council had taken in relation to the issue and responses that had been received from the Minister for planning or his officers.
Cr Lucas said a person could build a nice home and plan a nice view.
“People will then be sitting in their lounge room with a view and the next day they are looking at the wall of a large shed.
“I have looked at these situations and found that all sheds are legal.
“The issue has been raised before and I want a review to see how these things continue to happen,” the mayor said.
During a time when I covered this problem planning officers told me that people were not entitled to a view so had no grounds for objection if a neighbour built a shed in front of their homes.
My view is that this is poppycock and outright arrogance.
One person told me that he built a shed across his neighbour’s lounge room window because the only alternative was to block his own view.
One good question is why are such large sheds needed on residential properties?
