Fat cattle prices remain firm

THE Baw Baw livestock exchange at Warragul saw 1087 head at Wednesday’s fat cattle market, and Thursday’s cow and bull sale saw 409 cows and 24 bulls.
Prices did not falter at the Wednesday fat cattle sale this week.
With 1087 head on offer, of which there were 150 cows and calves sold after the heifer, steer and vealer market, 455 vealers sold to 236.6 cents with a lot of interest in the secondary vealers on offer.
The average price came back at 188.2.
A total of 191 heifers also attracted keen bidding and returned a top of 215.2 for an average of 164.2 slightly up on last week.
The market of 275 steers remained firm on last week and reached 215.6.
A good yarding of heavier steers gave processors plenty of room to fill orders which resulted in the steer average of 173.2.
The trend continued into Thursday where the bull and cow sale saw the yard average remain at 137 cents.
A total of 24 bulls were yarded and several made 175.6 cents per kilo while 409 cows saw weighed head reach a top of 169.6 and unweighed cows reach $855.
In all prices across the board remained steady and buyers are keen to purchase all on offer from the district’s top cattle selling centre.
