HUMAN power has rapidly become a formidable force in the Cardinia Casey region.
This must be a healthy development because VicHealth is seeing it as a worthwhile investment.
CaseyCardinia Human Powered Vehicle (HPV) and Cycling Club has received another generous grant from VicHealth and will use the money to start more clubs.
Forgive me for calling this a pedal car sport, but it is a sophisticated version of those tiny pedal cars we enjoyed so much as children. Riders are seated in a low position and propel their vehicles through a pedalandchain drive system that they are forever improving to get speeds as high as 40km/h.
They compete in 24hour relay marathons and this is generating tremendous interest.
The City of Casey is spending thousands of dollars to provide the sport with a dedicated racetrack at Casey Fields, Cranbourne, and schools see it as a priority activity.
Human powered vehicle racing is a sport that began in schools, but is continuing into the wider community and My view is that it will keep growing.
One problem is the cost of building vehicles as they become more and more technically sophisticated to gain the edge on competitors.
VicHealth and the HPV club have set up a way to overcome this by providing the finance and technical help and advice that could see three new teams a year added to the sport.
People wanting to become involved in the sport can now do so without having to worry about seeding finance.
Contact with the club can be made through John Perrin on 04 0730 or Terry Trevena on 0400 058 641.
