Students head to Parliament

SIX Kambyra Secondary College students will debate urban cat restrictions in the YMCA Youth Parliament.
The students are Michael Bassett, Jessica Bray, Kyle Moyes, Michael Schilling, Amy Wickson and Carly Williams.
Their experience includes a weeklong involvement with a camp and time in Parliament.
Casey community liaison officer Derek Sedgman said the Youth Parliament had become a highly recognised and commended program, providing a unique forum for young people to express their views while developing leadership skills and learning about the parliamentary system.
The Kambyra College Berwick team will represent the City of Casey.
The team has researched and will debate urban cat restrictions and present a case in the form of a bill in the parliamentary chambers.
After all the bills have been debated and have received the assent of the Youth Governor, they are forwarded to the Minister for Youth Affairs, who in turn distributes them to the relevant ministers for consideration.
The students will also take part in a formal opening and closing ceremony and a reception with Victorian Governor John Landy at Government House.
The program aims to provide a forum for young people to express their views on the State of Victoria and to provide the State Government with ‘bills’ that are an expression of young people’s concerns and expectations, and which can be acted upon by the Government.
The Youth Parliament is open to young people aged between 16 and 25 years.
