MORE St John Ambulance volunteers are needed for its community care branch which provides companionship visits to residents of aged care and special care facilities in Victoria.
Many residents within aged care miss out on regular contact with friends or relatives and a new friend can do much to relieve the feeling of isolation.
A walk, a drive, or a cup of tea in the park can give much needed relief from depression.
If the volunteer can run a group activity, the results from their visits can be extensive and cover more than one person.
Manager of Visiting Friends, Jim Humphrey, said both volunteers and residents can benefit.
“Our volunteers provide a wonderful experience not only for the resident but also for themselves as they gain much from the giving of their time,” Mr Humphrey said.
“They can perhaps widen their knowledge of the world around them.
“School or university students are especially welcome as often they add another experience to their studies.”
The volunteer does not need a firstaid certificate or to wear a uniform, but a police check is required which is arranged by St John Ambulance.
