WGLFL round 15 review

THE fight for fifth position on the West Gippsland Latrobe Football League ladder has intensified with Garfield’s defeat over Morwell. There are now four teams with a chance of taking fifth spot. Over the next four weeks interest will be kept high as Moe, Leongatha, Garfield and Drouin fight for the prized position.
Garfield was determined to put up a better showing against Morwell than in round five, when the Stars’ coaching panel had not been impressed with the way their side had been intimidated. The game started in a furious fashion and at the first break Garfield led by a single goal.
In the second quarter the Stars added a further 3.3 to Morwell’s 0.3 to establish a lead of 18 points. Ben Marsh was easily the best player on the ground and received great support from Andy Soumilas, while Neville Bow had been on the end of some great delivery and posted three of the four goals.
The floodgates then opened with Garfield slamming on eight goals to Morwell’s one in the third term and taking an unassailable lead of 61 points. The last quarter was purely academic and the Stars went on to a 58point victory.
Maffra continued on its way by handing out an 82point defeat to Warragul. The Gulls tried hard until halftime but Maffra took over in the second half as Ben Coleman, Paul Bills, Ben Durrant and Adrian Burgiel with five goals were sensational. For Warragul, Paul Wallin never gave up and Xavier Gargan, Ryan Davey, Paul McNulty and Ash Green kept at it all game.
Sale handled Drouin with ease and careered away to an 88point win. Some pundits thought Drouin would have put up more resistance as they had been travelling reasonably well over recent rounds. The rest of two weeks may have taken its toll. Teen sensation Chris Aurish slammed through six goals and was ably supported by Nick Fowler with four. For the Hawks, Jeremy Campbell, Chris Wallace and Brock Honeysett never gave up and received support from Justin Hamilton and Jordan Edwards.
Moe travelled to Traralgon in the knowledge that a victory could possibly cement fifth place but was never really in the hunt.
