FARMERS in South and West Gippsland can apply to Centrelink for up to six months’ income support because of the drought.
La Trobe MP Jason Wood said the support would be provided under the interim exceptional circumstances (EC) assistance plan.
He said the lack of rain in South and West Gippsland had led to severe water shortages and a decline in pasture growth.
“Costs associated with supplementary feeding and water carting made necessary by these conditions has greatly reduced farm incomes.
“Farmers can now apply to Centrelink for six months’ EC income support. Smallbusiness operators with up to 100 employees and who derive at least 70 per cent of their income directly from agriculture are also eligible,” he said.
“I wish to stress that this decision does not automatically lead to a full EC declaration.
“Such a declaration will depend on how much rain the region receives over the next couple of months,” he said.
Application forms for EC interim income support are available from local Centrelink offices or by calling 13 23 16.
