Good return by Pakenham juniors

PAKENHAM Tennis Club has had a successful winter competition with nine of the 11 junior teams and two of the four senior teams looking forward to playing in the finals over the next few weeks.
The junior Section One side scraped into fourth position and will play Narre Warren North in Saturday’s semifinal. The teams in sections Two, Six Blue, and 15 dominated, finishing on top of their ladders.
Pakenham teams in sections Eight and 14 finished second and earned double chances while teams in sections three, 16 Blue and 19 will also be competing in next Saturday’s semifinals. Teams in sections Six Red and 16 Red missed out on the finals but all team members improved throughout the season.
Junior players wishing to play competition tennis this summer should attend the selection day this Sunday at 4pm at the Anderson St courts or contact Craig Arthur, junior coordinator, on 5940 1182 before this date. The season begins on 8 October.
In the seniors the Mens B Special One team, led by club president John Gallasch, finished on top of the ladder and aims to play in the grand final. The Ladies C Special One team, led by club treasurer Leonie Arthur, was undefeated and is now hot favourite to take out the premiership.
Any senior players wishing to play competition tennis this Summer season should contact John Gallasch, senior coordinator, on 5941 2452 by the end of the month. The season begins on 8 October.
This winter the club entered one team in the Victorian Tennis Series pennant competition, the biggest tennis competition in Australia. The young team of Aleks Savanovic, Seb and Chris Moreno and Matt and Sean Bell competed in grade 15 and just missed out on making the top four after an unfortunate washout in the last round.
In the Wednesday night competition the Red team in A grade finished fourth and will compete in the semifinal while in B grade the young Pakenham Black team finished third to make the semifinals. Players wishing to play in the Wednesday night competition next season should contact Gordon Berry, phone 5941 3272, by the end of the month.
In the next school holidays club coach Paul Osborne will be running a coaching clinic for junior players of all standards. He is also taking enrolments for termfour lessons, which are held on Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons at the club, and can be contacted on 5629 2121 with inquiries and enrolments.
