Housing project is ‘on track’

Paul Dunlop
THE major VicUrban development project at Officer was said last week to be on track, with the organisation set to submit a rezoning proposal for the land by the end of the year.
Rejecting recent speculation that all was not well with the project, Gembrook MP Tammy Lobato said plans for the multimilliondollar, 4000home development were moving steadily ahead.
Ms Lobato said residents could expect to see the exhibited rezoning proposal early next year, subject to the approval of the Minister for Planning and the Cardinia Shire Council.
“The vital planning and design of the project is continuing, involving all stakeholders,” she said.
“The next significant step will be the rezoning application, which will mean that the land set aside for the housing development will become residential land.
“As this exciting development takes shape, it is important to keep the community involved.
“Submissions and feedback from other residents will be invited to ensure continual community involvement.”
The development at Officer is proposed to cater for a population of between 10,000 and 12,000 people.
Sustainability principles were said to be at the forefront in its design, with water quality measures, energyefficient housing and waste minimisation all being incorporated into the planning phase.
The 400hectare site will also include a comprehensive open space network, as well as retail areas, education sites and transport and community facilities.
Ms Lobato said VicUrban was also committed to the delivery of housing that was accessible and adaptable to people with disabilities or special needs, recognising that adaptable housing design was a vital component of sustainable communities.
“This Officer project will be an important local landmark in the provision of sustainable and affordable living,” she said.
“It will combine housing with services and open space including active, passive and conservation areas.
“The project is on track with construction expected to start in 2007.”
