Large market and strong competition

FOR the week ending Monday 28 November, the total yarding at the VLE Pakenham was 3906 plus bobby calves.
This number consisted of 1778 cattle on the previous Monday, 1150 on Tuesday and 978 at Thursday’s Store Sale.
Cattle numbers increased significantly this week with a lift of about 25 per cent overall.
The best competition came from feedlots and restockers with their purchases totalling about 30 per cent of the sale.
This helped to give some sort of buoyancy to the market at times, helping to keep price falls to a minimum with trade purchases averaging mostly 3c to 6c/kg easier.
Demand did vary throughout the sale which created fluctuating price trends.
Grown steers and heifers, and heavy yearlings continued to sell well with prices varying between firm and 4c/kg lower.
These cattle made up a significant percentage of the yarding, although the quality was quite varied.
