Man killed in pole smash

A BUNYIP man died when his car slammed into a power pole on Sunday.
Police said the man was driving a Hyundai Excel sedan north on Hope Street, Bunyip, just after 8.30pm when it left the road.
The driver, who has yet to be named, was the sole occupant and died at the scene.
Emergency service workers were called to secure the scene.
Police are appealing for any witnesses to contact Crime Stoppers. The circumstances of the crash are being investigated.
Pakenham Road Rescue Unit volunteers provided lighting at the crash scene to help police.
The unit’s spokesman Michael Bate said crews remained at the scene until 1.30am.
“Local power companies were also required to attend as the collision had dislodged high voltage transformers from the power pole,” Mr Bate said.
The 40yearold’s death brought the number of fatalities in the Cardinia Shire to two for the year.
Six people died on local roads last year.
Cardinia TMU sergeant Peter Garton said the weekend’s fatality was a blow.
Before the crash police had been pleased with the reduction in the local road toll during 2006.
