Small businesses, big impacts

By Jim Mynard
SMALL businesses in Victoria provide almost half of all private sector jobs, according to the guest speaker at a Monash University faculty of business and economics seminar at the Berwick campus.
Office of Small Business executive director David Latina said more than 300,000 small businesses in Victoria employed 811,000 people, 43 per cent of the private sector workforce.
The seminar, held on 17 October, was part of the Monash University Berwick Business and Education Group (MUBBEG) program.
The Office of Small Business provides information and support to Victorian small businesses and develops policies to promote their growth.
Mr Latina said small businesses were concentrated in property and business services, retail sales and construction.
“The Office of Small Business has many policies in place to assist small business operators to build their businesses.
“Some of the objectives the government has in this area include making Victoria the best place in Australia to start and build a business, promoting a fairer environment, encouraging high growth, including jobs and exports, training small businesses in management and planning, and improving government services for small business.”
The office website is www.business.vic.gov.au or you can contact it on 13 22 15.
MUBBEG has arranged another seminar for Tuesday, 6 December, and a business breakfast for Friday, 11 November.
