SPEED zone warnings could be painted on roads around schools in Cardinia Shire.
Cr Brett Owen has asked shire officers to prepare a report on the introduction of painted road surface zones around local schools, where the speed limit is 40 kilometres per hour.
Cr Owen said the report should include any safety advantages or disadvantages and estimated costs.
He said he would like to see the painted zones go on trial.
“I think there would be a genuine benefit for the community,” Cr Owen said.
“Motorists commonly go over the speed limit in 40km/h zones, it may be a big reminder to keep to the speed limit and may improve safety around schools.”
Mayor Kate Lempriere said she supported the initiative.
“Children’s lives are potentially at stake,” she said.
The report is due to be considered at the council’s January meeting.
