PAKENHAM residents have been warned to be wary of doortodoor salespeople extolling the benefits of water filters.
South East Water officials said they had received several complaints from people visiting homes around Pakenham, particularly in new residential areas, offering water quality tests with the intention of selling filtration units.
The company’s managing director Dennis Cavagna said he was alarmed that there were ‘unscrupulous’ operators posing as employers of the water companies.
“I am appalled that unsuspecting customers are being pressured into buying water filters by salespeople who claim to be employees of one of Melbourne’s water retailers.
“These people are misleading customers into believing that their drinking water is unfit for consumption after a phoney water quality test and are then pressured into buying an expensive water filtering system.”
Water officials said tap water in Pakenham and other towns in the region was safe to drink.
Mr Cavagna said the salespeople were trying to frighten people with claims that water could be responsible for a countless number of ailments.
Mr Cavagna said that in most cases water filters were an unnecessary expense.
