LONG serving member of the Akoonah Park management committee Marcel Fakhry officially opened the Akoonah Park Centre on Sunday, 4 December.
The centre was built to acknowledge the 50th anniversary of the park.
Mr Fakhry said he and the late George Wilson attended sheep dog trials at Korumburra nearly four years ago when the idea for a purposebuilt facility at Berwick was born.
“We sat on the steps of the Korumburra pavilion and said, ‘Why can’t we have something like this at Akoonah Park?’
“We took photographs of the Korumburra pavilion and took them back to the committee. The committee considered this and asked for more detail about the idea. We provided concept plans and it went on to more detailed drawings.
“Then it was a question of whether we could afford it. This was agreed and people can now see what we have,” Mr Fakhry said.
