IN a thrilling divisiontwo preliminary pennant final, Berwick came from behind to defeat Clayton by four shots on Saturday.
On a good bowling surface at Mulgrave Country Club, the many supporters of both sides were treated to a smorgasbord of good bowls from both sides.
Clayton quickly established an early lead with Cliff Fothergill’s rink trailing 010 and 313, but in a top fightback, with telling bowls from Laurie Edwards, Bob Gladman and Michael Adams, finally went down 2021.
Peter Frearson’s rink was nip and tuck for most of the game, but dropped seven behind before recovering to go down by one.
Keith Fox’s rink of David Fullaway, Roger Townley and George Harris went neck and neck before triumphing by four shots.
With Mark Walker’s rink, the last to finish, Berwick led by five shots, but shaky bowls under pressure saw Berwick four down, with Mark Walker having one bowl to play.
He answered the challenge to draw third shot and Berwick won a keenly contested final by four shots.
Berwick now meets YarravilleFootscray in the grand final.
It has been a top year for Berwick with two sides in divisionone after only six years in Metropolitan, plus promotion to sides in Divisions three, four, five and seven.

It was Berwick’s turn to offer its facilities as the venue for the VLBA Retina Research Charity Day on Thursday, 15 March.
Sixty players took part in the event and there were various raffles plus a cake stall that raised a total of $530 for this worthy cause.
President Jean Fothergill and her committee, together with bowls secretary, Wendy West and her committee, worked together to make this a pleasant and profitable day.
The winning rink was Judith Faulkner (skip) Joan Lillie (second) and Anne Whittaker (lead).
Runnerup was Margaret Quigley (skip) Lucy Ellwood (second) and Millie Murphy (lead).
