BRYN Mawr Bridge will be completed within a year.
La Trobe MP Jason Wood said this on Tuesday morning after the Federal Minister for Transport Jim Lloyd turned the first sod for work to begin on the railway overpass.
The bridge will complete a vital connection from Bryn Mawr Boulevard, which is the Manuka Road Berwick extension, across to Kangan Drive and Soldiers Road. It will join the Soldiers Road-Kangan Drive road system near the Beaconhills College Village campus at Kangan Drive.
Mr Wood said the bridge was the result of an election promise made during his campaign for the La Trobe seat.
“The sod turning came one year after we made the promise and the work will be finished one year from now,” he said.
Mr Wood thanked the Beaconsfield Progress Association for its lobby for the bridge.
“This bridge will make a fantastic difference to traffic flow in the area and will divert traffic on to Clyde Road,” he said.
Casey mayor Neil Lucas welcomed the event.
“I am sure the community will greatly appreciate the alternative route through this busy traffic area,” he said.
Cardinia mayor Garry Runge said the bridge would be a great asset for Beaconsfield residents.
“This will take traffic off Beaconsfield streets and I look forward to its completion,” he said.
“When you look at the layout of the road system it is logical to build the bridge over the railway line to complete the connection.”
